Along Varied Trails Through the Salzburg Pongau
Forest tracks, narrow paths, scenic climbs and sporting challenges: Around St. Johann im Pongau, trail runners will find a wide variety of routes for different fitness and experience levels.
We have selected four routes for you. They range from shorter loops around Alpendorf and the Liechtensteinklamm gorge to a challenging ultra trail with more than 2,000 metres of elevation gain.

Our Trail Running Tips Around St. Johann
Liechtensteinklamm Loop via Zederberg
This loop of almost ten kilometres connects Zederberg with Alpendorf and the area around the Liechtensteinklamm gorge. After the initial climb, the route continues across varied terrain and attractive trail sections before returning to the starting point at Kraftwerk Plankenau.

Alpendorf – Long Loop
This moderately difficult loop starts at the Alpendorf mountain lifts. From there, it leads towards the Liechtensteinklamm gorge, continues to Schwarzach and then returns to Alpendorf via the Thomassteig trail.
At 8.7 kilometres, this route is suitable for runners looking for a compact tour with varied forest tracks and trails.

Hahnbaum Trail Run
The Hahnbaum loop includes a considerable amount of elevation gain. Starting at Kraftwerk Plankenau, the route initially follows the Salzach river towards the town centre. The longer ascent begins behind the forest swimming pool and leads via Hahnbaumalm to Oberhahnbaum.
The return route follows forest tracks and trail sections back down into the valley. This 14-kilometre loop requires a good level of fitness and offers repeated views across St. Johann along the way.

The Ultra Trail Schwarzach is the biggest challenge in our route selection. Over a distance of 47.1 kilometres, runners tackle more than 2,300 metres of elevation gain. The highest point of the route is Hochglocker at 1,924 metres.
This route is intended for very well-trained and experienced trail runners. Careful preparation and consideration of the current weather and trail conditions are essential.

Suman Kulung
From Nepal to International Trails
Suman Kulung comes from Nepal and began working as a porter while still a young teenager. He later discovered his passion and exceptional talent for trail running.
Today, Suman is an internationally successful trail runner and a member of the Dynafit team. His greatest achievements include multiple victories in the Everest Marathon and winning the multi-stage Everest Trail Race. He has also achieved top finishes in numerous international trail running competitions across Europe and Asia.
In 2022, Petra Nocker-Schwarzenbacher and Dr Sigrid Schwarzenbacher met Suman in Nepal. This personal connection eventually brought him to St. Johann. Today, he is part of the brückenWIRT team and works in service as a commis de rang.
Since then, Suman has combined two worlds: at the hotel, he looks after our guests with genuine warmth, while in the mountains he trains for international trail running competitions.
As the brückenWIRT’s trail running ambassador, Suman shares his experience and gives our guests personal advice for their routes around St. Johann.
